DIY Foaming Hand Soap: Non-Toxic, Moisturizing

Looking for a DIY solution to your handwashing needs that is both non-toxic and doesn’t dry out your hands? Well, look no further than this DIY foaming hand soap! This simple, easy-to-make recipe uses natural ingredients like coconut oil, castile soap, and essential oils to create a soothing, nourishing hand wash.

In the wintertime I get REALLY dry and cracked (sometimes even bleeding) hands, doh! I live in a dry climate and I’m washing my hands A LOT (diaper changes, food prep, wiping booger noises….and the list goes on). While I was staying at my in-laws for a bit I noticed my hands weren’t dry like normal and it’s because they use this awesome non-toxic hand soap recipe. So I wanted to share it with ya’ll! I also love that it’s easy to make, uses less plastic waste, and I can quickly whip up a batch without needing to go to the store.

Below you will find the recipe. The essential oil drops are optional, and instead you could use castile soap with essential oils already added if you still want a scent. If you do use essential oils, do your research to ensure it’s a safe option and you are diluting it correctly. This is especially important if kids, pregnant and or breastfeeding people are using. Here is the list I reference for safe options. If your child using the soap is under two then I would just avoid adding essential oils.

This recipe makes about 8 oz, so I usually double the recipe to fill my soap dispensers.

Ingredients for DIY Foaming Handsoap

-2 Tbsp Castile Soap. My favorite is Dr Bronner’s. I use either the unscented version or the lavender. When I use the lavender I don’t add essential oil drops.

-2 tsp Fractionated Coconut Oil

-4 to 10 Drops Essential Oil (optional). Make sure you use a safe option especially if kids, pregnant, or breastfeeding people will be using. Here is the list I reference for safe options. If the child using the soap is under two then I would just avoid adding essential oils.

-8 oz Distilled water. It’s important to use distilled water because it’s pure and doesn’t add minerals and contaminants to your soap.

Instructions for DIY Foaming Hand Soap

1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients and mix to combine. This would be the castile soap, fractionated coconut oil, essential oil (optional), and distilled water.

2. Transfer the DIY foaming hand soap mixture to a foaming soap dispenser. My soap dispenser has a smaller opening so I like to use a small funnel to pour the liquid in to the container to make it mess free.

OR you could put all ingredients right into your soap dispenser and gently mix or still until combined and then you’re done!
