Non-Toxic Popsicle Mold Materials

Glass would be the best non-toxic popsicle mold material however that is not in the marketplace and not sure if that’s even a smart option?! The best non-toxic popsicle mold materials available for sale are:

  • Food grade stainless steel popsicle molds
  • Food grade silicone popsicle molds
  • BPA-free and phthalate-free popsicle molds

Stainless Steel Popsicle Molds

Stainless steel is consistently called out as one of the best non-toxic materials out there when it comes to the kitchen. However, I did want to call out that I found studies about metal leaching into some foods. Stainless steel is made of chromium and nickel and there are studies of these metals leaching when in contact with acidic food. Foods that are high on the acidic scale are lemons, limes, plums, grapes, grapefruits, blueberries, cocoa, and dairy. So pretty much all of the ingredients I’ll be using to make my popsicles, le sigh. The concern is some people are sensitive to nickel and chromium and exposure can also cause dermatitis. Stainless steel is still a great option, however if I purchased a stainless steel popsicle mold I would freeze it, remove from the mold, and then put it in a separate container for storage (or maybe I would just leave them in there lol).

Are silicone popsicle molds better than plastic?

Probably.

Plastics are well studied and ingredients like phthalates, and bisphenols (BPA) can leach into your food. Exposure to these chemicals have proven negative health effects like being an endocrine disruptor.

Silicone cookware, bakeware, and food storage is newer to the scene so there aren’t many studies on the safety. The US and Canada governments do state that food-grade silicon is safe. However there are studies coming out about siloxanes leaching into food with high heat. There is little evidence about it leaching chemicals when used at low temperatures. Silicone studies are something I’ll be keeping an eye on. Ensure you buy high-quality, food grade silicone that does not include fillers.  People say you can test for fillers it by pinching and twisting on a flat surface. If white shows through it uses fillers and if it does not change color then there are no fillers.

Ecoberi Silicone Popsicle Molds

Ecoberi Silicone Popsicle Molds stepped up to the plate with a fun idea. It reminds me of the freezies I used to get back in the day, blue was my fav. This is what I purchased for my family and we absolutely love them! It’s so easy to use and kids can easily help out creating the popsicles. We just pour in the juice, close up the cap, and stick it in the freezer. The cap is super secure and there are no leaking issues. One of the advantages of this style is its ability to contain drips, especially on hot days. With this design, you won’t have to worry about sticky messes running down the sides and making kids all messy and sticky.

Here are the product features:

  • Materials: 100% food grade silicone and BPA-free
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Comes with an attached lid. Score! Otherwise I’d be losing them.
  • High reviews. People state the lid is secure, popsicles slide out easily and they are versatile and some people fill with snacks. Clever people out there.
  • Please note: They recommend initially freezing the pops upright however they don’t provide a tray to do so so you would want some sort of container or space if your freezer to keep them up. Some reviewrs did note they didn’t have problems freezing them on their side.

Ecozoi Stainless Steel Popsicle Molds: With Bamboo Sticks

I included both variations of the Ecozoi stainless steel popsicle molds, the bamboo stick version and stainless steel stick version in addition to a round version. • About the company: There mission is to “Save Planet, Save Oceans, Stay Healthy, and SAY NO TO PLASTIC.” They also plant trees for every purchase made and are 100% women owned. Pretty darn cool if you ask me!
  • High ranking reviews
  • Please note: In order to take the popsicles out they do recommend to dip the container in warm water so the popsicle will come out easier. People state it comes out easier than silicone molds. Also they state the bamboo sticks are reusable which I don’t think would work well in my family (they will be chewed, dropped in the dirt, lost, etc) and it seems they don’t offer replacement sticks.

Zoku BPA-Free and Phthalate Free Popsicle Molds

Zoku BPA-Free and Phthalate Free Popsicle Molds

If you are set on purchasing a plastic mold, then Zoku BPA-Free and Phthalate Free Popsicle Molds could be a good option for you. Here are some product features:

  • Materials: BPA-Free and Phthalate-Free plastic
  • Stick includes a drip guard which means potentially no sticky fingers, however reviewers state the drip guard doesn’t help much since it’s a small guard and you don’t really eat a popsicle pointing straight up.
  • Highly reviewed with high ratings. It’s an amazon choice product.
  • Please note: To release from the mold you should run under warm water. Also you can not put in the dishwasher which may be a deal breaker for some.
